Yoghurt is a dairy product made by bacterial fermentation of milk. Yoghurt can be made from all types of milk including plant-based milk. Research has shown that plain yogurt (whether it is Greek or not) is considered as the best yoghurt. This is because it does not contain any added artificial flavour, added sugar or other materials that do not benefit the health. Benefits of taking yoghurt include:

  1. Yoghurt is rich in most nutrients that your body needs such as Calcium, B-Vitamins, and trace minerals.
  2. Yoghurt especially the Greek variety is high in protein which is helpful for appetite and weight management
  3. Yoghurt especially those from dairy and are not heat treated help to prevent or improve gastrointestinal disorders, associated diseases and brain health because they contain live active cultures.
  4. Yoghurt helps to increase high density lipoprotein or good cholesterol. It also reduces blood pressure.

  • Read the labels
  • Choose plain, unsweetened varieties
  • Stick with a recommended portion size for either full fat or low-fat yoghurt.
  • Look out for ‘unpasteurized’ yoghurts or yoghurts labelled with ‘contains active or living cultures’
  • Get yoghurt with few ingredients.
