What to do to prevent fatty liver?

The liver, located beneath the rib cage in the right upper abdomen is the largest solid organ in the body. It removes toxins and poisonous substances from the body’s blood supply, maintains healthy blood sugar levels, regulates blood clotting, helps digest fat and perform other functions.

Have you heard about the ‘silent’ fatty liver disease?

Fatty liver disease occurs when  too much fat is built up in the liver. A healthy liver contains a small amount of fat. It becomes a problem when fat reaches 5% to 10% of the liver’s weight and for up to 30% of people with the condition, fatty liver disease results in chronic condition which gets worse over time and lead to liver failure or liver cancer.

What are the forms of fatty liver disease? Fatty liver disease caused by alcohol consumption
• Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease- which is as a result of obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, high levels of fat especially triglycerides in the blood, metabolic syndrome, pregnancy, side effects from some types of medications, some types of infections, such as hepatitis C, certain rare genetic conditions.

Belly fat
• Pains in the upper right abdomen
• Fatigue

How to prevent fatty liver disease? • Maintain a healthy weight
• Exercise regularly.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Take medications as prescribed.
• Reduce the intake of ‘added’ sugars and processed foods.
• Reduce the intake of fried foods
• Eat nutrient-based diets
i- Rich in vitamin E: avocado, spinach, jute leaves and other greens, mango, asparagus, pumpkin seeds, almond nuts, peanuts, hazel oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, red bell pepper, snails, shrimp and tomato.
ii-  Rich in omega-3- fatty acids: walnuts, flaxseeds, salmon and sardine
iii- Rich in antioxidants: broccoli, soy protein, coffee, berries, garlic, sweet potatoes, green tea, ginger, apple, lemon
